Paul Smith, touring in Normandy
The Bike Plus shop staff have many years of experience in all areas of the cycle trade and have also been Club Cyclists and CTC members for a number of years, during which time they have been on many cycling tours, Audax events as well as general club riding, road racing, time trials and track racing. Although more recently on a personal note the racing has been reduced to the odd excursion to remind myself why I stopped in the first place. Not only does it last longer but I get pinker and completely boss eyed; which is why I now prefer touring!
I have been in cycle retail management for seventeen years, after deciding that Life Assurance was not for me (that took six years). I started my career in the cycle trade with one of the very first mail order retailers, 'Freewheel' mail order catalogue, before moving on to what most would call traditional bike shops, at the same time working on a part time basis for a specialist lightweight cycle accessory wholesaler (part time to earn a bit extra; a temporary job that lasted seven years!). The bike shops were not only stockists of children's and adult bikes and accessories but specialists in the lightweight Touring and Racing scene, supplying bikes to customers' individual specification. I personally built many of the bikes, including the wheels (I must have built well over 1000 pairs by now).
Other experienced Bike Plus Staff who have all been in the Cycle Trade for many years include Paul Taylor, who in the Summer of 2001 completed the London-Edinburgh-London Randonee and in 2003 he completed the legendary Paris Brest Paris (you should have seen the state of him when he got back to work....bless him), Ex National Squad rider Paul Butler, Time Trialist Guy Harris and Sutton Cycling Clubs Steve Wright who has more bikes in his Operating Theatre (yes, his workshop is that clean and tidy) than the entire US Postal Team put together! so between us we should be able to answer any queries you may have.
Although we are a mail order company, we do have mechanics Ben and Peter Wise available for wheel building and up-to-date expert knowledge on the latest components. Both are also regular cyclists - Peter competes in Road Races and like all of us, commutes to work by bike.

He is our Road and Touring bike mechanic, and was also voted the best wheel builder in the UK by Cycling Plus magazine.
